YMCA Celebrates Major Success at the SA Aquatic Industry Awards
YMCA South Australia is celebrating an incredible achievement at the 2025 South Australian Aquatic Industry Awards, taking home multiple wins across key categories that recognise excellence, innovation, and impact in aquatic education and safety.
Thebarton Aquatic Centre claimed the title of Swim School of the Year, less than a year after opening under YMCA SA management. The award recognised the centre’s rapid growth and strong community engagement, with the program expanding from 500 to more than 1,400 weekly students in its first 12 months. The team’s passion for professional development and inclusion was also acknowledged, with Thebarton hosting regular AUSTSWIM training and mentoring new teachers through hands-on experience and feedback. Their commitment to supporting swimmers of all ages and abilities, including tailored one-on-one lessons and thriving adult programs, has set a new benchmark for community aquatics.
Tarcan Kupsch, from Purruna Spencer Newton Centre, was awarded Best New Teacher. A former competitive swimmer, Tarcan brings a deep understanding of technique and performance to his teaching. His enthusiasm, technical expertise, and ability to connect with young swimmers have made him an inspiring educator and valued member of the YMCA SA aquatics community.
Fleurieu Aquatic Centre’s Natalie Bruce took home the Swim Australia Teacher of Excellence in Babies and Toddlers award. Natalie was recognised for her warmth, creativity, and ability to connect deeply with families, ensuring each child feels safe and supported while developing essential water skills. Her innovative teaching methods, including sensory-based tools and behaviour strategies tailored to each child’s needs, have had measurable impacts on student confidence and engagement. Natalie also plays a key leadership role at the centre, mentoring other teachers and fostering a collaborative, growth-focused team culture.
Andrew McKay, from Thebarton Aquatic Centre, was honoured as Lifeguard of the Year. With over 30 years of experience as a teacher and more than a decade in aquatic safety, Andrew is known for his calm, professional approach and exceptional rapport with school groups and families. His presence embodies YMCA SA’s values of care, respect, and community. Andrew’s dedication to creating a welcoming, safe environment has left a lasting impact on thousands of children and educators participating in school programs each year.
Adding to the celebrations, The Parks Recreation and Sports Centre received recognition for Community Aquatic Program of the Year for its Adelaide Youth Training Centre Swimming Lessons. This initiative provides vital swimming and water safety education for detained youth aged 10–18. Delivered free of charge, the program gives participants confidence, purpose, and valuable life skills, helping build rehabilitation and connection through sport.
These collective achievements showcase YMCA South Australia’s dedication to excellence across every level of aquatic programming. From award-winning teachers and lifeguards to transformative community programs, YMCA SA continues to make a powerful impact across South Australian communities through safety, inclusion, and the joy of swimming.
