Paw-sitive vibes at the Strathalbyn Pool
Strathalbyn’s much-loved Paw Party returned for its fourth year this May, transforming the town’s community swimming pool into a playful paradise for pups, all in support of mental health.
Nearly 300 dogs took centre lane across five joyful sessions, making a splash in both the 50m and children’s pools, while their humans bonded over belly rubs and shared smiles. This one-of-a-kind event not only delighted dog lovers, and was even featured on 7 News’ Ray of Sunshine segment, but it most importantly raised over $2,500 to fund local mental health initiatives. It’s a feel-good way to farewell summer, after the pool has closed to the public, and give back to a town that continues to show up for one another.

Strictly for four-legged attendees, the pool’s water chemistry is specially adjusted in preparation, and lifeguards are on-site managing crowds and handing out the occasional dog treat.
“The Paw Party is certainly one of our favourite days of the season,” says Elysse, a team member at the pool. “It’s fantastic to see the event bring a real sense of community and connection. People travel from Adelaide and beyond to attend, so it’s also great to welcome them into our community.”
Elysse adds, “Being able to use the pool grounds in an innovative way means we can still serve our community even while closed for the season.”
The event provides more than just a splash and a play for furry friends. For a town like Strathalbyn, that has faced significantly higher mental health challenges in the past than the national average, the Paw Party has become a bright spot on the local calendar. Funds raised from the Paw Party go towards programs that uplift wellbeing, resilience, and connection in the local community.

With plans already in motion for next year, the Strath Pool team is looking forward to continuing this joyful tradition. The pool will reopen for human swimmers in October, after a thorough clean, of course!
