Banding together for a greener world
A small band making a big difference
Fleurieu Aquatic Centre is turning a simple item into a symbol of environmental care and child safety. The introduction of reusable wristbands for 5–9 year olds is part of a broader commitment to community wellbeing and the environment.
The new wristbands have replaced disposable plastic-coated paper bands, supporting both sustainability efforts while still maintaining the centre’s focus on proactive child supervision. With bright colours and clear visibility, the bands continue to remind parents and carers of their vital role in poolside safety as part of the Watch Around Water program.
“By switching to reusable wristbands, we’re not only reducing waste going to landfill, but also modelling sustainable behaviour to families and patrons. This effort is part of YMCA South Australia’s commitment to environmental sustainability.” Says James Lomax, Fleurieu Aquatic Centre Manager

Every returned band makes a difference
By phasing out single-use bands, we’re keeping unnecessary waste out of landfill and encouraging sustainable habits among families and staff alike.
Community members are encouraged to return wristbands at the end of each visit. A dedicated return basket is located at customer service for convenience. If a band was accidentally taken home, returning it during the next visit is greatly appreciated.
This initiative is one of the many ways YMCA South Australia continues to put community wellbeing at the heart of our operations, through environmental stewardship, child safety, and partnerships with families.
